## What we ordered them on

How big the waste bin is, whether the radio will join your network, and how long the warranty runs.

What owners actually complain about is the fourth figure we look for. Every specification is read from the page the brand or the retailer controls, and every price is a dated observation rather than a live quote. Every figure links to the page we read it on, and where a figure is not published we show a dash and say so.

## Three worth shortlisting

One for each kind of household.

Each one is on the list for a stated reason, and the reason is printed beside it. The full breakdown sits on the review page, with the owner complaint record and the date we read it.

### [PETKIT PuraMax 2](/reviews/petkit-puramax-2/)

Enclosed rotating drum, sealed waste bin

Two-year warranty, an 11-sensor array and the lowest entry height we found, at a price well under the two premium units. The 2.4 GHz restriction and the clumps that stick behind the grate are the two things to plan around.

Best value for a multi-cat home $299–$300 2 years warranty moderate setup risk

### [Whisker Litter-Robot 4](/reviews/litter-robot-4/)

Enclosed rotating globe, sifting

Supports the largest household we found at up to four cats, and works with the clumping litter you already buy. You pay for that in price, footprint and a stream of carbon filters and OdorTrap packs.

Best when reliability outranks price $699–$799 1 year warranty moderate setup risk

### [Neakasa M1 Plus](/reviews/neakasa-m1-plus/)

Open top, rotating drum, pull and wrap bags

Open top, 33 lb ceiling and a kitten mode from 2.2 lb. The open design costs you odour containment and adds litter tracking, and long-term owners report the door gears cracking after about a year of heavy use.

Best for a large or anxious cat $379–$599 2 years warranty lower setup risk

## Our setup-risk score

Five published facts, added up. Not a mystery rating.

Every product gets a setup-risk tier. It is a plain count of five published facts, not a mystery rating. The formula is published on the [methodology page](/methodology/) so you can recompute it yourself.

Setup-risk score

Five published facts, added up

2.4 GHz only

+1

One-year warranty

+1

Bin under 8 L

+1

Noise 40 dB or more

+2

Warranty unconfirmed

+1

0–1 is lower risk, 2–3 is moderate, 4 or more is higher.

*How each tier is read, and which published facts put a product in it.*

| Tier | Score | What it means | Contributing factors |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| lower | 0–1 | Nothing in the published record points to a common setup problem. | Long warranty, dual-band radio, large bin, measured noise below 36 dB. |
| moderate | 2–3 | One or two factors worth planning around before you order. | 2.4 GHz only, a one-year warranty, a bin under 8 litres, or noise at 40 dB and above. |
| higher | 4 or more | Several documented friction points at once. Fine, if you know about them. | Any combination of the moderate factors, plus a warranty we could not confirm. |

## Four decisions that matter

The four things worth checking before you order.

### Bin volume beats drum size

Marketing leads with the interior volume because it photographs well. What you live with is the waste drawer. A 6.7 litre bin needed daily emptying with two cats in independent testing. A 13 litre bin held nearly two weeks. Multiply the stated bin volume by the number of cats and then halve it for realism.

### Check the radio before anything else

Five of our eight units are 2.4 GHz only. If your router splits the bands onto separate networks, that unit will not pair and you will not get a full-bin alert. The two units in our set that do 5 GHz are the Petcove PurrTek and the PETKIT Purobot Ultra.

### The warranty is the motor's life

One year is the default. The units rated for a two-year plan or a lifetime are the ones whose manufacturer expects the motor to last. Long-term owners of the Litter-Robot report sensor calibration issues after roughly eighteen months, which is exactly where a one-year policy stops helping.

### Litter compatibility is a hard limit

Most globe units need standard clumping clay. The CATLINK manufacturer explicitly advises against pure tofu and long-strip tofu. Using the wrong litter is the single most common cause of a clogged mechanism, so check the compatibility list before you order, not after.

## Where our data comes from

Specifications are read from the pages named on each product.

Complaint records are published owner reports cited at the top of each review. Prices are dated observations. [The full method is here](/methodology/), including what we deliberately leave out.

## Common questions

**Do self-cleaning litter boxes really work?** The mechanism works. What varies is the execution. In an independent 90-day comparison of eight units, seven completed every cleaning cycle without an error, and one froze mid-cycle and needed a manual reset. The failures that recur are narrower than the marketing suggests: clumps sticking behind a rotating grate, sensors needing recalibration after a year and a half, and 2.4 GHz-only radios that will not join a modern router.

**Which one should I buy for two cats?** Start with waste bin volume, not the drum size. A 6 to 8 litre bin is emptied roughly every week with one cat and every two or three days with two. Our set lists the volume for every unit. The Litter-Robot 4 supports up to four cats with a 7 to 8 litre drawer; the CATLINK Luxury Pro X has the largest drawer we found at 13 litres.

**Why does the Wi-Fi band matter so much?** Five of the eight units we track only connect on 2.4 GHz. Newer routers often split 2.4 and 5 GHz onto separate networks, and a unit that cannot join your network is a unit that cannot report a full bin to you. The Petcove PurrTek and the PETKIT Purobot Ultra are the two in our set that do 5 GHz.

**How much does the running cost add up to?** It depends on the design. A globe unit that takes your own clumping litter costs you liners and a carbon filter. The PETKIT PuraMax 2 states a pod that lasts up to a month. Disposable crystal trays are a different model entirely: the PetSafe ScoopFree needs a fresh tray every two to four weeks, so that cost never stops. We list consumables for every product.

**Is a one-year warranty normal here?** Yes, and that is the point. One year is the category default. The PETKIT PuraMax 2 and the Neakasa M1 Plus both carry two years, and the Petcove PurrTek is listed with a lifetime warranty. On a machine that runs a motor every day for three years, the warranty length is one of the most useful numbers on the page.

**Do I need an app?** No. Several units in our set run entirely on their own sensors, and the app adds convenience rather than function. What it does add is a full-bin alert, which matters more in a multi-cat house where the two-week figure collapses to three days.

## Narrow it down first

Set your cats' weight, your budget and the features you need, and the dataset filters itself in front of you.
