Where the numbers come from. This page draws on four kinds of source, and every section names the one it used: Neakasa’s own product page and the M1 user manual for the specification; retailer listings for the price; Forbes Vetted and Wirecutter for the safety record; and published owner reports from Best Buy, Amazon, Trustpilot and Neakasa’s own reviews page for the complaint record. · read 2026-10-31.
The safety question comes first
In 2025 there were reports of cats being injured by the Neakasa M1. The mechanism was a magnet in the silicone entry mat that could loosen, let the drum rotate past its intended stop, and trap a cat. Neakasa changed the firmware and redesigned the gear. We are leading with this because it changes what you have to check before you buy, and because no other page we found puts it in the same place as the specification.
What Forbes Vetted published
The model appears in the “4 Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes I’m Testing Next” section of Forbes Vetted’s Best Automatic Litter Boxes 2026 — it is not one of their recommendations — with this editor’s note:
“(Editor's note: Neakasa's support team recently released a response on Facebook regarding two safety incidents with the M1, saying the litter box's firmware was updated to fix the issue. We'll keep an eye on developments to see if it's still worth testing this model.)”
and, in the buying advice:
“For instance, the $380 Neakasa M1 had two reported safety incidents, according to the company's response on Facebook; there are also several affordable models like the Amztoy (and similar devices under various generic-sounding brand names) that have been linked to serious injuries or death in cats.”

What Wirecutter did
The Neakasa M1 was a Wirecutter pick. It no longer is.
“The Neakasa M1 was formerly a pick for cats who prefer to use uncovered boxes. Instead of an enclosed globe, it has an open top, which makes monitoring your cat and adding litter much easier. But there were a few safety incidents where cats were reportedly injured when the Neakasa's drum over-rotated and trapped the animals. The company has since updated its firmware, and it removed teeth from the gear in its new model to make over-rotation impossible. In the meantime, if you own the M1, make sure that it's using the newest firmware. And contact the company for a new gear (Neakasa lists its contact info as [email protected]).”
“We plan to test the updated Neakasa M1 Plus, since the company has made the necessary safety upgrades, including removing teeth from the globe's gear.”

What Neakasa says, in its own words
Two statements published in the maker’s own subreddit, and the only official communication we found on the incident.
“After receiving feedback about the unusual-rotation the M1 litter chamber late April, we prioritized this issue immediately. We commenced an investigation and began exploring solutions right away. Recently, we noticed another post on social media detailing an incident involving the M1 in Vietnam. We take this matter very seriously.”
“Mandatory Firmware Update — We automatically rolled out version …07-9 to users, with nearly 80% of devices already updated. For those still offline, we have sent reminders through website, email, and in-app notifications to ensure all users complete the update for a safer, more stable experience.”
“Designing and Testing a New Gear Component — We are in the process of a new design for M1 expected to be finalized by July. This new component is intended to provide dual protection alongside the firmware safeguards.”
“Pre-Installing Latest Firmware on New Devices — All M1 units manufactured from June 2025 will [come] with firmware …10-0019 pre-installed, preventing this issue from occurring without requiring a manual update.”
“Redesigning the Magnet Structure for Increased Durability — We are enhancing the design and materials of the magnet to prevent it from detaching, loosening, or corroding.”
“We have also developed a series of video guides covering the following topics: How to check the silicone pad magnet; How to update your M1 firmware & the functionality of the M1 with the new firmware if the magnet is missing.”
“While the incident reported in Vietnam remains unverified, it underscores the importance of listening to your concerns and responding with care.”
“Please note that this is the most recent and only official communication from Neakasa regarding this issue. No third party or individual is authorized to represent us.”
Source: r/neakasa, read 2026-10-31. Neither post carries a published timestamp we could read; their dates come from their own text (the first refers to late April and to units “manufactured from June 2025”; the second to a report learned about “in the past week”).
What the mechanism is
Wirecutter’s wording: “there were a few safety incidents where cats were reportedly injured when the Neakasa’s drum over-rotated and trapped the animals.” Neakasa’s own list of actions names the part involved: it is redesigning “the magnet” so it cannot “detach, loosen or corrode”, and the new firmware verifies that magnet’s presence so the unit “will refrain from rotating” when it is missing. Neakasa’s fix therefore has three parts, in the maker’s own list: firmware that checks the magnet is present and refuses to rotate if it is not; a gear with the teeth removed so over-rotation is mechanically impossible; and a redesigned magnet.
What this means if you are buying one in October 2026. Neakasa’s own FAQ for the false-full error leads with the sensor and the bag:
“Step 1: Please check if the trash bag is full and replace it as soon as possible; Step 2: If a new trash bag has been replaced, please take out the trash bag and check whether there is still a prompt; if there is no prompt that the waste bin is full, it may be that the trash bag has not been smoothed out and triggered a false alarm from the sensor. Please smooth out the trash bag before loading it. Step 3: If it still prompts that the waste bin is full, please pull out the waste bin, wipe the dirt on the sensor at the bottom with a clean paper towel.”

So before you buy, check four things. Whether the unit is running firmware …10-0019 (or at minimum the …07-9 release Neakasa says 80% of devices had by its statement). Whether the gear teeth have been removed — that is the mechanical fix, and it is the one you cannot get from a firmware push. Whether the silicone mat’s magnet is seated and uncorroded. And whether the seller is Neakasa itself, because the replacement gear is offered through support.
M1 and M1 Plus, item by item
These are two different machines that share a name on the brand’s own site, and the confusion is not ours — it starts at the source. On the URL for the M1, the body copy describes the M1 Plus, and one product variant on that same page is labelled “Model: M1 Plus”. Neakasa’s store showed both machines on sale at $379.99 (regular $549.99) on 2026-10-31, with the M1 Plus step bundle at $419.99.

- The M1 is the older drum. The M1 Plus adds a further set of infrared sensors (“Upgraded with 6 sets of sweeping infrared sensors”, against the M1’s 5 pairs) and a larger stated interior.
- Entry height is 17 inches on the M1 Plus and 13.86 inches on the M1 — a 3-inch difference that decides whether an arthritic cat can use it.
- The gear fix is tied to the model. Wirecutter writes that the company “removed teeth from the gear in its new model to make over-rotation impossible” and that they plan to test “the updated Neakasa M1 Plus”. A new gear is not a new drum.
- Warranty. Neakasa’s own product pages state: “European Union & United Kingdom: 2-year limited warranty; United States & Canada: 1-year limited warranty.” The M1 manual says “The warranty period for this product is 12 months from the date of purchase.”
- Consumables are the same: proprietary pull and wrap bags, and a deodoriser block on the M1 Plus.
- The 14-day claim is a single-cat laboratory figure. Neakasa’s page says “Usually you only need to empty the waste container about 14 days for one cat.” A 3-cat owner on the same machine reports “it lasts almost exactly 48 hours before needing changed”.
Which one should you buy now
Neakasa’s own store listed both machines on sale at $379.99 (regular $549.99) on 2026-10-31, with the M1 Plus step bundle at $419.99. The M1 is the older drum; the M1 Plus is the unit Neakasa is manufacturing and shipping, with the current firmware and the new gear in place.
- If you want the current machine, buy the M1 Plus: $379.99 at Neakasa, regular $549.99 — Neakasa M1 Plus, and our own M1 Plus record, which sets out the 17-inch entry height and the 2-year warranty claim against the maker’s own 1-year US figure.
- If you want the M1 — the lower 13.86-inch entry height — you are buying the older drum. Ask the seller two questions before you pay: which firmware version is on the unit, and whether the gear has been replaced with the toothless version. If they cannot answer both, treat the machine as the pre-fix version.
- If you want the replacement gear, go through the maker rather than a retailer. Neakasa’s own guidance is that owners who want the new gear contact [email protected]; the gear is supplied by support, not by shops.

What the record says
The strengths and the drawbacks, as the sources state them.
Every line below comes from the source we cite. Where the source did not say, we left it out rather than filling the gap.
What the manufacturer gets right
- Highest cat weight ceiling in our set at 33 lb, with a kitten mode from 2.2 lb
- Open top, and the skittiest cat in independent testing used it within hours
- Two-year protection plan
- The pull and wrap bag system was the cleanest disposal method tested
What you will argue about
- Open top leaks more odour and tracks more litter than an enclosed drum
- Largest footprint in our set, needing about 2.8 square feet
- Weight tracking is approximate rather than precise
What owners complain about
Published owner reports, quoted rather than counted.
The complaint record below is drawn from the owner reports in the sources we cite. We do not scrape, score or aggregate reviews ourselves, and we do not turn them into a star number, because a star number implies a measurement we did not perform. Where an owner report names a failure, we print it as it was written and we leave it standing.
The owner reviews behind this research were sampled between July 2025 and June 2026. A complaint we cannot cite does not reach the page, so the record is shorter than the number of reviews it is drawn from.

- “It works well until it starts to tell you that the waste is full. You change the bag but it continues to tell you its full. 1), have to make sure the bag is perfect. 2) you constantly have to clean the bottom of the robot (thats what Neokasa customer service is only good for). FYI, only can communicate via email with them, big con! After 4 months, after making sure bag is perfect and cleaning the bottom, it kept telling me full and would not stop getting notifications until I silenced them. So if you decide to try this, make sure you get the total protection plan in case.” — Best Buy review, rated 3 out of 5 stars
- “Horrible product! I had this for 5 days and on the 4th day it stopped functioning properly. It stated that the dirty litter bin was full so I emptied it (it was no where near full). After emptying the waste bin and changing the bag, I kept receiving notifications all day while at work that the waste bin was full which I knew could not be possible… Nothing worked and the automatic litter box would not cycle due to it 'thinking' the waste bin was full!” — Best Buy review
- “Buy a warranty sensors are sensitive — Overall love the product but the bag senor has gone bad and its not even a year old yet. So im pretty miffed. Im glad i bought a warranty with it.” — Best Buy review
- “I bought this last December and the product worked great. It stopped working and was giving several different reasons in the app for it. It would say litterbox is full (when it was empty) or motor overload when it wouldn't move. Contacted customer service and went through a variety of attempts to fix. None worked. They said they are sending me replacement sensors. I was sent a motor (with no directions). Thought I would try to replace it but not easy to do. If it was easy, I would have been fine with that. However, parts aren't easy to replace, particularly with no directions. I realized the company is expecting me to be their factory technician and told them how ridiculous that is. They said they would send me a replacement. I don't hear anything so I contact again. Said they're waiting to hear from the warehouse. I email again and then get a response saying they don't ship to Alaska. Best Buy was able to ship this to me without a problem (got it in 2 days).” — Best Buy review, rated 2 out of 5 stars
- “Except if the bin is full, and it goes to clean, it will stay upside down and not return to normal position. You cant open tray when its upside down cause cat litter and feces will go everywhere. Its happened twice now, so i have to unplug, carry outside, slude open bin and make a mess doing so, then take out trash and bring back in plug in and wait. Also it wastes litter, moreso then the previous brand i bought.” — Best Buy review
- “Taking apart the box to do a deep clean and get it working again? Lining up the screw holes on the tray with the box? Zero stars. I was ready to admit defeat and have a proper tantrum, hours later. Thank god for Reddit. The tray needs to be perfectly positioned for the sensors to work.” — Neakasa customer reviews page
- “Great Litterbox, Bad App … Two complaints I have: 1. The app is terrible. I've had constant login issues and really outside of firmware updates there's really no need to use it. It'd be nice if it worked better, but not a dealbreaker. 2. When I got this, I was advertised 'up to 14 days' before it needs changed. Well I have 3 cats and it lasts almost exactly 48 hours before needing changed.” — Best Buy review
- “We've had our Neakasa M1 for about two years now, and recently started experiencing issues with the sensors misreading that the bin is full when it's not. We tried cleaning them which worked temporarily. When we reached out to customer service I didn't expect to receive a reply. However, they replied within a day and offered to send us new sensors for free, (or a refurbished replacement lower unit) in spite of being out of warranty.” — Trustpilot review of neakasa.com
- “Customers report that the litter box is not durable, with one customer noting issues with weak internal gear teeth and another mentioning poorly sealed seams.” — Amazon listing B0CSKBWBF6, which covers the M1 and M1 Plus family
Running cost. The bags are the recurring line, and they are proprietary. “The proprietary bags from Neakasa are around $30 USD to purchase and you get 30 for the price.” (Wired, read 2026-10-31.) Neakasa’s own store lists 2 rolls, 30 bags in total, at $19.99, and states an estimated usage time of about 3–5 months for one cat.

Before you buy
Is the Neakasa M1 safe to buy now? It is the model with the 2025 safety record, and the fixes are real and documented: firmware that refuses to rotate when the mat magnet is missing, and a gear with the teeth removed so over-rotation is mechanically impossible. What we cannot tell you is whether the unit in front of you has the new gear, because there is no serial-number lookup. If you are buying it, ask the seller — and if the answer is “firmware only”, treat that as the old mechanical risk still present. Wirecutter's advice for owners is the same: newest firmware, and request a new gear from [email protected].
Should I buy the M1 or the M1 Plus? The M1 and the M1 Plus were both on sale at $379.99 at Neakasa's own store when we read them on 2026-10-31, with the M1 Plus step bundle at $419.99. The M1 Plus has more infrared sensing hardware, a stated 70 L interior, and an entry height of 17 inches against the M1's 13.86. If you are buying new in the United States, the M1 Plus is what is actually being manufactured, with the gear fix and the current firmware pre-installed. If you are buying the M1, you are buying the older drum and the question becomes whether the gear has been changed.
Is the 14-day claim real? It is a single-cat laboratory figure and Neakasa's page says so: “Usually you only need to empty the waste container about 14 days for one cat.” Independent owners with two to four cats report a bag change every two to seven days, and one Best Buy reviewer with three cats reports “almost exactly 48 hours”. Budget the consumables for the number of cats you actually have.
What should I check before buying? Read the methodology page, then check three things against your own home: the firmware and the gear on the unit (ask before you pay), the waste bin volume against your cat count, and the Wi-Fi band against your router. Then read the warranty terms in the manual, because consumables are excluded and out-of-warranty returns ship at the owner's cost.
